NOTE ON HONG KONG SALARIES
Before Dr. Sloss left this country C.S.D. consulted
him on a number of points arising out of the new
salary scales. Unfortunately it was not possible to
discuss them with Dr. Sloss personally and the
consultation, therefore, had to be by correspondence.
1.
The points which were raised were as follows-:
Administrative scale
The scale recommended (in dollars per month is
month)
720, 720, 760, 800, 840, 880, 920, 960, 1,000,
1,060, 1,120, 1,180 then, subject to an Efficiency Bar
1,840
1,300, 1,420, 1,540, 1,660, 1,780,/1,900.
·x".
It was suggested that it would be better if, after
$ the 1,000 point, the scale proceeded direct to 1,120
and then by increments of $60 a month to 1,600, then
by 80 a month to 1,840.
The above scales gives a big rise after the ninth
year, when the family responsibility and expenses of
the officer begin to increase considerably. This
follows the practice in the West and East African Colonies, and booda Doms in the existing Hong Kong
scale. The scale also avoids the £90 increments
suggested by Dr. Sloss and provides regular increments
of £45 per annum up to $1,600 with £60 increments
thereafter.
*
It makes the Hong Kong scale of the same length as the Malayan Administrative scale but it
reduces the maximum to £1,630 as compared with £1,675 in
